Stroke is one of these diseases, a cerebrovascular accident-popularly known as brain attack-that causes the most damage-that is, when the patient does survive.

Every year, 17 million people die around the globe from cardiovascular diseases (World Health Organization). Around 120,000 of these deaths take place in Spain (Spanish National Statistical Institute), and almost 20,000, in Catalonia (Government of Catalonia). That number is the reason why now, while World Heart Day is approaching, medical research is relying on new technologies to move forward: to reduce that figure, to improve patients' quality of life, and to find effective solutions to prevent and cure those diseases.
